Accompanied by certification from the world-renowned Guild Gem Laboratories, established in 1980, this necklace is authenticated and graded by one of the most respected pearl laboratories in the industry. The report confirms the pearls as genuine Japanese Akoya cultured pearls, awarded the Superior Top grade, measuring approximately 6.9–7.4mm—a timeless size suitable for both everyday elegance and formal occasions.
The Guild report further records five-star roundness, five-star lustre, and an exceptional five-star nacre thickness of approximately 0.40–0.45mm. For Japanese Akoya pearls, this is remarkably close to the recognised upper limit of 0.50mm, making it an outstanding nacre thickness. Thick nacre is the foundation of exceptional Akoya pearls, contributing to richer lustre, greater depth, enhanced durability and beauty that lasts for generations.
Perhaps most importantly, the necklace is awarded the Guild's five-star lustre—the very soul of a fine pearl necklace. Lustre is widely regarded as the single most important factor in evaluating pearls, and this strand displays a beautiful silky radiance with crisp reflections and exceptional depth. The body colour is a classic snow white, while subtle blush-pink Akoya overtones gently emerge as the light changes.
Although officially graded as Superior, I personally feel the Guild grading standards at the time were exceptionally conservative, particularly regarding surface quality and matching. By today's standards, and based on close inspection, I believe this strand comfortably exceeds the official grading. Surface blemishes are extremely minimal—even under close examination—and the consistency throughout the necklace is outstanding. Nearly every pearl is of a quality that could be selected individually for fine earrings or rings. Please refer to the close-up photographs for your own assessment.
The necklace is finished with an original Japanese orchid clasp featuring natural black mother-of-pearl petals, crafted in S925 sterling silver with matching S925 hallmarks. Both ends of the necklace are fitted with detachable clasps, allowing it to be worn traditionally or styled as an elegant Y-necklace by fastening either end directly onto the orchid clasp. It is an artistic and versatile design that can be worn from the front or reversed for a different look.
Originally sourced from the Hong Kong International Jewellery Show, this necklace has been carefully kept in my collection and is now being released for sale, and I hope it finds someone who will truly appreciate both its quality and its understated beauty.
